Leader Responsibilities
Hamlin Summer Campers are grouped by grade into campgroups: Pumas, Cougars,
Jaguars, Tigers, Panthers, Cheetahs and Lions. Each campgroup represents
a single grade. Each campgroup consists of 5 - 15 children led by a Group
Leader (GL) and assisted by an Activity Leader (AL) and a
Junior Counselor (JC).
Group Leaders are responsible for group supervision and organization and
activity planning for her/his campgroup. Each day GLs lead their campgroups
on CampGroup Adventures (CGAs) in and around San Francisco. One campgroup
may favor swimming at North Beach Pool, another may create a tent village
in the Presidio, while a third may prefer to create skits and play tag
at Corona Heights. Adventures arise from the collaboration of the camp's
creative campers and counselors. Campers learn to use public transportation
while traveling these locations. Activity Leaders
(AL) lead activities on or around campus with groups of
kids of varying ages. These activities include, but are not limited to,
ceramics, climbing wall, outdoor living skills, sports & games, cooking,
Theme Days, photography, arts & crafts, drama, dance, and nature crafts.
Group Leaders and Junior Counselors may also assist in these activities.
Leader Qualifications Group Leaders must be at least eighteen (18) years of age and a high school graduate.
Activity Leaders must be at least sixteen (16) years of age and entering 11th grade.
Applicants should have a familiarity of recreational resources in San Francisco
for kids and have the ability and desire to lead a variety of outdoor activities
for a group of campers. Previous experience working with children is a plus.

Coordinator Responsibilities
TheLeadership Coordinator
manages the Leadership Training Program (LTP) and supervises the Junior Counselors.
Responsibilities include LTP curriculum management, supervising all LTP components,
attending multiple camping and backpacking trips, leading training sessions
for Junior Counselors, and assisting the Camp Director with staff training and
camp management.
The Overnight Coordinator
organizes and leads all of the weekly overnight camping trips. Responsibilities
include preparing and managing personnel on the trips, training campers and
staff in outdoor camping skills, coordinating all logistical needs of the trip
including safety, food, transportation, camping supplies and itineraries, and
assisting the Camp Director with staff training and camp management.
The Extended Care Coordinator
directs the before and after camp program from 7:30 AM – 9:30 AM and 4:00
PM – 6:00 PM. S/he is in charge of activities, snacks, supervision and
dismissal. Other responsibilities and hours are possible dependent on skill
set.
The Technology Coordinator
assists the Camp Director with the program and marketing components that involve
Technology (i.e., website, digital photography, database management). The Technology
Coordinator is a half-time position but may add on other responsibilities and
hours dependent on skill set.
Coordinator Qualifications
Coordinators (except Technology) must be at least 21 years old and preferably
a college graduate. Technology Coordinator must be at least 18 years old.

Job Descriptions
Staff Training
Being a camp leader is a demanding job. There is a great deal of responsibility
and organization required beyond having fun. We want you to be successful in
your job. Training at Hamlin Summer Camp is intense and demanding, and helps
you develop the skills necessary for success. It is also filled with fun, useful
and hands-on activities that are essential for staff development and teambuilding.
Our goal is to make training as much like camp as possible: a ton of fun! It
is a great resume builder too! Leaders should be available in the training week
during the same hours they are working at camp.
Staff Training Schedule
Mon., June 6: First Aid and CPR training (if needed), at Hamlin
Tue., June 7: Orientation, at Hamlin
Wed., June 8: Training Retreat, at Marin Headlands
Thu., June 9: Training Retreat, at Marin Headlands
Fri., June 10: DAY OFF, NO TRAINING
Sat ., June 11: Prep and Set-up Day, at Hamlin
First Aid and CPR
All Leaders and Coordinators must receive First Aid and CPR training before
camp begins. We schedule a training class on the Monday before Staff Training
begins at Hamlin. Classes are also offered at colleges, hospitals and through
local chapters of the American Red Cross. Please call the camp office if you
need help finding a First Aid/CPR certification class.
Additional Responsibilities
Group Leaders complete written updates of the activities and behaviors of their
campers after each session. Activity Leaders must inventory their activity areas
and prepare weekly program plans. All staff members complete an end of summer
evaluation of camp and self.
Coordinators meet regularly with the Camp Director and help plan staff training
sessions. They submit written updates of their program plans and periodically
assess them as well. All staff members complete an end of summer evaluation

Each day, we hold all-staff meetings in the afternoons after camp begining
at 4:45 PM. We try to keep the meetings to 15 minutes, but they may run over.
Staff meetings may include reports on camp events, updates on campers or additional
training. Also, to accommodate working families, we offer free extended care
after camp until 6:00 PM each day. Therefore, each leader assists one day per
week in supervision of campers in PM Care.
All staff members shall present a neat appearance and all clothing needs to
be appropriate for the day’s activities. Appropriate attire includes shoes
for comfortable walking, bathing suits for swimming and "play" clothes
for getting dirty.
CHILDREN LEGISLATION
California Assembly Bill 2194 provides for the furnishing of conviction records
involving drugs and violence in addition to sex offenses. Fingerprints and summary
criminal history information are required prior to employment or volunteering.
